“PFOA’s, PFOC’s, PFHxx – Oh My!” Trace Contaminants in Groundwater – A Case Study Perfluorinated Compounds are man-made chemicals that enhance our daily lives by providing waterproofing for your hiking boots, stain-proofing for your upholstery and fire—fighting foams at airports. However, when these compounds leach into the groundwater, they are an emerging class of water contamination, even in concentrations in Parts Per Trillion. This presentation will trace the contamination of a class of these PFAs in a small water utility, from discovery through initial action, temporary mitigation and final treatment.

Our climate shapes our lives. The ways we build our roads, manage our businesses and farms, move our water, and use energy are all influenced by our unique Indiana climate. But our climate has been changing, and it will continue changing in ways that affect our productivity, our safety, and our livelihoods. Our state’s average temperatures have increased 1.2°F since 1895 and are reasonably expected to increase 5-6 °F by mid-century.  Precipitation is becoming heavier and more damaging in the winter and spring, and soil water may become less plentiful in the summer and fall, with implications for agriculture, ecosystems and floods and flood-related damages.  The Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment (INCCIA) is providing accessible, credible information to Hoosiers, allowing us to better understand the environmental changes coming our way and the implications for many aspects of Indiana’s economic and social systems.  Coordinated by the Purdue Climate Change Research Center (PCCRC), scientists and decision makers from across the state have been working together to develop a series of reports on ten important subject matter areas:  Climate, Health, Forest Ecosystems, Urban Green Infrastructure, Energy, Recreation and Tourism, Water Resources, Aquatic Ecosystems, Infrastructure, and Agriculture.

Being an Owner’s Representative is the ability to juggle the needs of various organizations, boards, contractors and designers and the ability to deliver bad news. As we know on all projects there is bad news and it does not age well. The key to being able to be an Owner’s Representative is communication. How to communicate and deliver the message is the key to success. The session will talk about being the Owner’s Representative on the recently built Phoenix Theatre as well as two other current projects and the strategies used to ensure positive communication. As engineers communicating effectively can be a challenge. We will discuss some of those and how to overcome them.

For grid-scale energy storage battery technology is still far too expensive. Cheaper options are compressed air and pumped hydro. Indiana geology and topology is not ideal for either. Instead, the Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy at is looking into the use of subsurface mine voids as a lower reservoir in communication with a surface lake to provide pumped hydro energy storage. Hydraulic wind turbines sited in the lake can raise water for later release through penstocks to a buried powerhouse which can deliver 200 MW to the electric grid for up to 6 hours.

An Introduction to The Engineering and Science Behind Sports and Play This presentation will introduce some of the ways that engineering and science help manufacturers, architects and owners develop, install and maintain safe sporting and play venues. Some of the topics that will be included are: protecting lower extremities, preventing severe head impact trauma, friction, traction and more. The presentation will discuss how engineering is applied to the surfaces, equipment, and padding commonly seen in sport and play venues.
